Eating alone deteriorates the state of health

8 profiles to eat it alone

In this study of nearly 9,000 women and men enrolled in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2015, the authors established 8 profiles for eating alone:

After correcting for various risk factors, including age, income, number of family members, marital status, smoking and physical activity, the authors come to the conclusion that the metabolic syndrome is the women and men aged 40 to 64 who eat the three main meals alone are higher.

Meals as a social link

Same trend among men who eat alone or in the evening, either at noon and in the evening, who see their risk of presenting a metabolic syndrome increased by about 50%, compared to those who do not eat alone.

The relationship is however not as simple as this, and it is an inverse relationship that is found in women who eat alone for breakfast, with a reduction in the risk of metabolic syndrome of the order of 30%.

In their discussion, the authors explain that food does not only have the role of nourishing, but that it also helps to build social fabric and relationships between people. And that eating alone could reflect the shift to a society characterized by individualism and isolation, which could affect food balance.
